You Don't Mess With Zohan

This isn’t the typical design we would evaluate here, but it is still a very interesting one. To evaluate the script design of a movie is very much out of the box. The movie “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan” is a very difficult movie to evaluate. Its beginning is very interesting because it discusses the Arab-Israeli relationship. The problem is that comedy is added to this movie, which makes it kind of useless. Either it should have been a comedy movie discussing a different context, or a very serious movie/documentary about the relationship between the Arabs and Israelis. We have to question our self if it is the right thing to compare the Arab-Israeli relationship in a comedy movie or not, if we have decided this, we can talk about the quality of design of the script of a movie; I personally think that a very serious issue shouldn’t be discussed in such a comedy movie.

Humour, Zombie and Donut

Han Hoogerbrugge, a great designer, as his works in this idpure edition as well as his website prove. He went to the Rotterdam Art School, where he studied painting. All of his works are based upon inspirations he gained throughout his everyday life. His main work, or basically only, is the creation of animations, which he produces based upon his idea of what the current world looks like. Adrien Rovero - his interior designs

Adrien Rovero decided to pursue his training with a course in industrial design the ecal (Lausanne school of art). In October 2004 he obtained his diploma. Every piece he designs, tells an own story. The thing that makes his project more interesting than the rest of the peoples is that he wants to communicate something with his designs, and pieces. He likes to be influenced when designing things. His designs all look incredible, and different. They are not why were used to from the rest of the world. They look special, and out of the normal; it is this certain piece that when people look at it, they want to have it .

Lotie

Lotie lives and works in Paris. She was born in 1976, and gained her master in History and a degree in Art History in 2001. She decided to dedicate her time entirely to drawing and illustration. She uses Indian ink, or pencil on paper to create her works. Her biggest fear, is to become outmoded and not realizing it. Her dream idea is to have pictures or productions that express energy. When looking at her ideas, I must say, she has achieved her goal. All of her designs look incredibly lively and express great energy. They set the viewer in a happy mood, and want them to look at more.

GVA STUDIO – Distinctive simplicity

Three highly interesting creative people, have joined together to open a studio in January 2004 in GVA (Geneva). They have created a community which consists of journalists, photographers, architects, musicians, designers and stylists, who work together to display works in the studio. They really want to make sure to not have a fixed style, as they want to be open to everything and not copy anyone else’s ideas. They are experts especially in the typography scene, as they have gathered a lot of knowledge about it, and are convinced it is one of the most important elements in design. When doing something for their clients, they try to meet its expectation as well as possible, but also keeping their own style and source of inspiration in mind. They make everything as simple as possible, and this is the key to their success.

Graphic abundance

Tom Pfister, Juliene Junghaeni, Roland Zenger, and Philip Luethi have had a very nice idea; they decided to put all of their talents together to make a 160 paged book with the title: “Daddy broke my bike.”. This is very interesting because they wanted to express themselves freely, without any theme or guiding principle that has to be regarded; in their designs they only incorporate the most essential piece of information or interest, they ignore everything else. This overall is so interesting because of the great idea, to integrate their skills and thoughts into an open minded, just like they are, book. The pictures on the following pages of the magazine show that they have great thoughts, and produce great designs, where each one looks different than the other.

The MacBook Pro 17" Battery

This is an absolutely astonishing piece of design. It lasts up to eight hours which is absolutely unbelievable. Only a few changes were made to its previous product but these were very essential changes. First of all, the battery is built in, which saves the space of the mechanics of having an exchangeable one. This allows 40% more battery in the same amount of space used than before. With this, the user can charge his laptop 1000 times; more than three times as much as the normal notebook and all of this because of their adaptive charging technology (computer talks to the battery and tells her how much power is needed, power flow is then regulated or increased depending on demand). In addition, the shape of the battery is customized by apple to fit its designated space which is rectangular, whereas nearly all other producers have batteries that are like normal round shaped ones. The customized shapes allow the space to be used much more effectively. The battery being customized, also allows apple to do with it what they want: size and purpose can be determined by them. This is what they use as their advantage; the active material that stores the energy for the battery can store three times more than the industry standard. Apple says that they invest as much time and effort into their battery design than no one else in the industry; this is proven by an absolute miraculous piece of design that they have created for the new 17" notebook generation. The new MacBook Pro will be charged three times more often and have a three times more lasting battery than the average notebook – only a great design makes this possible.

Asus Bamboo

Finally, one of the biggest computer companies (Asus) on planet earth have reacted to the climate concerns; their answer: Asus Bamboo notebook. It is eco-friendly, made from sustainable natural materials and very light weight. At a twelve inch screen it only weighs 1.57 kg. It is loaded with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, has up to 4GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard disk, and of course it also has a fingerprint reader. All of these facts show that design doesn’t have exclude function, but even more importantly that design/form and function can work together WITH environment. This notebook is clearly making a big step towards future and environment friendly products, as well as advancement in technology.

Porsche Panamera

The new four-door Porsche Panamera is an absolute stunner. The designers from Stuttgart in Germany have finally made a dream come true. A lot of people dream to drive a Porsche once in their life. A few of them could actually afford to buy one, but have always had one big problem; only two people could fit into this car. The first exception took place with the Cayenne, which is an SUV without competition. It is the non-plus-ultra out on the market. It has the biggest prestige and everyone wants to have it. Those that still wanted a Porsche for the entire family but not a SUV have now found what they have searched for, the brand new, released as of summer 09 Panamera. It looks like a long version of the 911, and although some people might not like it on the first glance, the more you look at it, the more it blows you away. It can be ordered with up to 500bhp which is an unstoppable force. The new Porsche, designed for with power, elegance, and for the entire family.

Audi's I-Robot TT

This is an example of how a company attempts to promote itself and its image for the future. Audi made promotion for their brand by showing it in a movie that represents the future. It gives the viewers two impressions. First of all: “I want an Audi in the future”, and “If I get an Audi, it will still be modern in many years”. Basically they convince people to buy their cars now as well as in the future which is a great idea. The car is designed in an absolute great way. It looks very futuristic and modern. Like in most designs, form also follows function here; it isn’t ready for the streets yet, but looks very nice and catches everyone’s attention. The white color is also very neutral, strong, clean and emphasizing the future looks.

New 17" MacBook Pro

This new laptop designed by Apple in California is another exemplary example of design and what it takes. The entire model has basically been re-designed, with a new uni-body aluminum case, a multi-touch track pad made out of glass, new grafik-processors by NVIDIA, and a new 8 hour battery life. In addition the looks of this laptop are once again currently unbeatable and set new standards throughout the world. The smaller and yet so much more powerful notebook from apple sets new standards that everyone will once again admire.

The three following posts really grabbed my attention:

The post on Neatorama by Cindy really inspired me. I really love the design of it, and think that it is a great design. Form incorporates function! It really looks interesting and attracts the eye because of its colors. It really makes the viewer look a 2nd and 3rd time. In addition to looking good, it also has a proper use; it is very comfortable, and the reader doesn’t have to get up to read a book, he can just grab it from the position he is sitting in. This is a really attractive design, in which form incorporates function and it really makes use of color and the effects it has on the viewer.
The 2nd post I really enjoyed reading in more depth was by Ika, and about the "La-Z-Boy" chairs. The chair really looks incredible and the functions it incorporates are really unbelievable. Having a fridge, phone, heating, a massage system, loudspeakers and laptop rest in a chair makes me speechless. It also looks pretty good, which really makes it worthwhile taking another look, and makes the consideration to buy it pretty realistic. Who wouldn’t want to have a chair like this, in which he can relax and hang around in?! Everyone would want it. It is great design, and I am convinced it will stay around for a long time.
The last design that really grabbed my attention was the post on the “Modbook” by Nicki. This absolutely blew me away. It amazed me so much that I even researched it myself after reading the blog. The idea of making a MacBook, a tablet is awesome. This will really lets all design orientated people’s heart beat faster. Just like our IBM tablets, this is a tablet on which you can draw and do all the other creative stuff. I would suggest this to everyone who really wants to have the coolest of the coolest and needs to sketch a lot on his way. It is a great design.

Salomon RS7

This new ski boot from Salomon ski is absolute great design. It uses a new technology which was newly patented by Salomon, which is called "Advanced Shell Technology" which actually guarantees the perfect fit. It permits perfect control as well as transmission. It also has the new versatile V-Shaped inner form for heel locking, and still is very toe comfortable. Some of the very modern ski boots, allow you to choose between two modes. Walking and skiing, which makes the walking much more comfortable. This, usually had to be done by hand, but the new boot switches it automatically, which is a lot comfort abler. Although all of this new modern technology is incorporated into the shoe, it doesn’t lake any comfort; great design.

Cell Phone

This phone collection is an absolute great design. It has really filled a gap in the industry. It does finally not prefer business over pleasure. It is colorful, which increases the mood of a user when he uses his phone, and still it has a 2-megapixel camera, and other “toys” or “unnecessary” utensils. It is also very practical because it has an external display with which you can see the most important information such as time, and newly arrived messages or mail. Softbank has released this phone in the “Tokyo Girls Collection”, which really increases the interest even more, because current customers will really have a look at this phone. This phone will be a great success! Unfortunately, it is only being sold in Japan; no other country in the world has access to it. Great phone, great design.

Q5

The Audi Q5 is a very well designed car. It has less CO2 emission than its college Q7; and incorporates approximately the same amount of features. It is orientated to the same type of customer as the Q7 is, with the small difference: the size of the briefcase. The Q5 has a very nice style; it looks longer than it actually is, and is still high, which provides a lot of space. In addition, form doesn’t follow function, form guides function. The SUV design enables completely new ideas such as 4x4 (Quattro) or aerodynamics which have to be completely redefined. Overall, the Q5 is a great design.

Blackberry Storm

The new blackberry storm is the first blackberry ever enabled with a touch screen. This means some serious competition for the Iphone. The blackberry has the newest technology; of course 3G, looks extremely good, and can even synchronize with iTunes. It can do everything the Iphone can, and is much more of a business phone. It is much more developed in the e-mail technology, is much more energy saving, and cheaper in countries which afford roaming costs. In addition a lot of people have already used the blackberry before, and liked it because it is very simple to use, and good quality. Apple will still stay a major on the cell phone market, but not as much because blackberry has an answer to its Iphone. Overall, the blackberry storm will have such an impact because its previous models have showed a lot impressive features, and because of its attractive design. In this case, form doesn’t follow function 100%, its more form meeting function.

Adidas Adi Pure

The New Adi Pure is a great design. Although it may really look old school, it is a great boot. I, myself am wearing the boot, and I can say that I love it. For the past years I have changed my football boots very often, I wore several Nike models and the Adidas F50 last year. All of these shoes always lacked something. No matter if it was the personal touch I was missing in the Nike vapors, or the quality in the studs of the Adidas F50. The new Adi Pure on the other hand, is very close to perfection. It is extremely comfortable, light weight, and is very close to the ground. The technology behind this shoe isn’t old at all; it is as modern as it can be. It fits the highest expectation which is proven by the fact that many top stars such as Frank Lampard and Philip Lahm wear this boot. Something that is even more astonishing than the shoe itself is the price. It only costs 100 euro. This may sound like a lot, but the other boots in this quality cost between 190 and 250 euro. Overall, this is a greatly designed shoe which may look old school, but has very modern technology, for a very good price.

The New MacBook is a really good, but not great design. The new versions are made of a complete aluminum case which makes them lighter, and like always, look really good. In addition a new mouse pad has been created and installed; this works as an interactive panel. The same panel can be used for the click, moving around the mouse, or using one of the new applications of twisting, and turning pictures; as well as zooming in and out. Overall, the MacBook doesn’t really offer anything really new besides the mouse pad, but the people will still go to the stores and buy the product. They just love the design, and want to have the newest and best which Mac has to offer. Mac really has to be complimented on this, they create objects which we feel as a "must have". They should keep up the good work, and maybe come up with some new inventions which are really significant for the next time.

This is the so called eclipse design phone. It only has a number panel, and a screen to see what you are typing. It includes nothing which the, also modern phones, such as the iphone have. It doesn't have a camera, games, or any multimedia device options. It is just a plain phone, no features, nothing. I personally think that the phone looks great, and the idea behind it isn't bad, but just not as good. I think a lot of people need more than only a phone in the modern time. We will see how good it is when its going to get produced.
